New particle fits description of elusive Higgs boson, scientists say

The scientists outlined their final analysis based on research and particle collisions using the Fermilab Tevatron collider near Batavia, Illinois.

(CNN) -- Scientists said Wednesday that they had discovered a new particle whose characteristics match those of the Higgs boson, the most sought-after particle in physics, which could help unlock some of the universe's deepest secrets.

"We have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature," said Rolf Heuer, the director general of the European Organization for Nuclear Research, which has been carrying out experiments in search of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest particle accelerator.

"The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson opens the way to more detailed studies, requiring larger statistics, which will pin down the new particle's properties, and is likely to shed light on other mysteries of our universe," Heuer said.

The particle has been so difficult to pin down that the physicist Leon Lederman reportedly wanted to call his book "The Goddamn Particle." But he truncated that epithet to "The God Particle," which may have helped elevate the particle's allure in popular culture.

Announcements by scientists about their analysis of data generated by trillions of particle collisions in the LHC, which is located beneath the Alps, drew avid applause at an eagerly awaited seminar in Geneva, Switzerland, on Wednesday.

Finding the Higgs boson would help explain the origin of mass, one of the open questions in physicists' current understanding of the way the universe works.

The researchers stressed the preliminary nature of the results they were announcing Wednesday.

"A more complete picture of today's observations will emerge later this year after the LHC provides the experiments with more data," the nuclear research organization, known as CERN, said in its statement.

But despite the words of caution, the scientists' mood and many of their comments were brimming with enthusiasm about the potential scope of what they had discovered.

"It's hard not to get excited by these results," said Sergio Bertolucci, the research director at CERN.

The announcements by the CERN researchers come two days after scientists in Illinois said they had crept closer to proving the existence of the Higgs boson but had been unable to reach a definitive conclusion.

The U.S.-based scientists outlined their final analysis based on more than 10 years of research and 500 trillion particle collisions using the U.S. Department of Energy's Fermilab Tevatron collider near Batavia, Illinois, whose budgetary woes shut it down last year.

They passed the baton onto their counterparts using the LHC, which is much more powerful than the Tevatron.

Located 328 feet underneath the border of France and Switzerland, the LHC cost $10 billion and has been sending particles smashing together in 17-mile tunnel for the past 18 months.

High speed proton collisions generate a range of even smaller particles that scientists have been sifting through in search of a signal in the data suggesting the existence of the Higgs boson.

The elusive particle is part of a theory first proposed by physicist Peter Higgs and others in the 1960s to explain how particles obtain mass.

The theory proposes that a so-called Higgs energy field exists everywhere in the universe. As particles zoom around in this field, they interact with and attract Higgs bosons, which cluster around the particles in varying numbers.

Imagine the universe like a party. Relatively unknown guests at the party can pass quickly through the room unnoticed; more popular guests will attract groups of people (the Higgs bosons) who will then slow their movement through the room.

The speed of particles moving through the Higgs field works much in the same way. Certain particles will attract larger clusters of Higgs bosons -- and the more Higgs bosons a particle attracts, the greater its mass will be.

While finding the Higgs boson won't tell us everything we need to know about how the universe works, it will fill in a huge hole in the Standard Model that has existed for more than 50 years, according to experts.

"The Higgs boson is the last missing piece of our current understanding of the most fundamental nature of the universe," Martin Archer, a physicist at Imperial College in London, told CNN.

A favorite theme of science fiction is "the portal" - an extraordinary opening in space or time that connects travelers to distant realms. A good portal is a shortcut, a guide, a door into the unknown. If only they actually existed ... It turns out that they do, sort of, and a NASA-funded researcher at the University of Iowa has figured out how to find them.

"We call them X-points or electron diffusion regions," explains plasma physicist Jack Scudder of the University of Iowa. "They're places where the magnetic field of Earth connects to the magnetic field of the Sun, creating an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun's atmosphere 93 million miles away."

Observations by NASA's THEMIS spacecraft and Europe's Cluster probes suggest that these magnetic portals open and close dozens of times each day. They're typically located a few tens of thousands of kilometers from Earth where the geomagnetic field meets the onrushing solar wind.

Most portals are small and short-lived; others are yawning, vast, and sustained. Tons of energetic particles can flow through the openings, heating Earth's upper atmosphere, sparking geomagnetic storms, and igniting bright polar auroras.

NASA is planning a mission called "MMS," short for Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission, due to launch in 2014, to study the phenomenon. Bristling with energetic particle detectors and magnetic sensors, the four spacecraft of MMS will spread out in Earth's magnetosphere and surround the portals to observe how they work.

Just one problem: Finding them. Magnetic portals are invisible, unstable, and elusive. They open and close without warning "and there are no signposts to guide us in," notes Scudder.

Actually, there are signposts, and Scudder has found them.

Portals form via the process of magnetic reconnection. Mingling lines of magnetic force from the sun and Earth criss-cross and join to create the openings. "X-points" are where the criss-cross takes place. The sudden joining of magnetic fields can propel jets of charged particles from the X-point, creating an "electron diffusion region."

To learn how to pinpoint these events, Scudder looked at data from a space probe that orbited Earth more than 10 years ago.

"In the late 1990s, NASA's Polar spacecraft spent years in Earth's magnetosphere," explains Scudder, "and it encountered many X-points during its mission." Because Polar carried sensors similar to those of MMS, Scudder decided to see how an X-point looked to Polar.

"Using Polar data, we have found five simple combinations of magnetic field and energetic particle measurements that tell us when we've come across an X-point or an electron diffusion region. A single spacecraft, properly instrumented, can make these measurements."

This means that single member of the MMS constellation using the diagnostics can find a portal and alert other members of the constellation. Mission planners long thought that MMS might have to spend a year or so learning to find portals before it could study them. Scudder's work short cuts the process, allowing MMS to get to work without delay.

It's a shortcut worthy of the best portals of fiction, only this time the portals are real. And with the new "signposts" we know how to find them.

Scientists at Cern will announce that the elusive Higgs boson 'God Particle' [click on the 'Related post' link at the bottom of this news article to explain Higgs boson] has been found at a press conference next week, it is believed.

Five leading theoretical physicists have been invited to the event on Wednesday - sparking speculation that the particle has been discovered.

Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider are expected to say they are 99.99 per cent certain it has been found - which is known as 'four sigma' level.

The management at Cern want the two teams of scientists to reach the 'five sigma' level of certainty with their results - so they are 99.99995 per cent sure - such is the significance of the results.

Tom Kibble, 79, the emeritus professor of physics at Imperial College London, has also been invited but is unable to attend.

He told the Sunday Times: 'My guess is that is must be a pretty positive result for them to be asking us out there.'

The Higgs boson is regarded as the key to understanding the universe. Physicists say its job is to give the particles that make up atoms their mass.

Without this mass, these particles would zip though the cosmos at the speed of light, unable to bind together to form the atoms that make up everything in the universe, from planets to people.

The collider, housed in an 18-mile tunnel buried deep underground near the French-Swiss border, smashes beams of protons – sub-atomic particles – together at close to the speed of light, recreating the conditions that existed a fraction of a second after the Big Bang.

If the physicists’ theory is correct, a few Higgs bosons should be created in every trillion collisions, before rapidly decaying.

This decay would leave behind a ‘footprint’ that would show up as a bump in their graphs.

However, despite 1,600 trillion collisions being created in the tunnel - there have been fewer than 300 potential Higgs particles.

Now it is thought that two separate teams of scientists, who run independent experiments in secret from each other, have both uncovered evidence of the particle.

However, the two groups, CMS and ATLAS, are expected to stop short of confirming its existence.

What is shocking is that we still live in the same exact reality construct that Plato observed during his time! It is alarming to see that the allegory still applies to us today and this was written in 514 AD -520 AD. That means nothing has changed! In reality, we are people chained to this 'world of shadows' illusion. The cave represents our Thinking Mind which is enclosed in a skull. We believe we are our Thinking Mind and therefore since our thinking mind is enclosed in a skull we are left literally like in a darkened room.

What are the shadows?

"A shadow is an area where light from a light source is obstructed by an object." - wikipedia

Light, such as sunlight, is absorbed by our eyes and is obstructed by our own mental projections (the labels we give all kinds of phenomena). We then only refer to what the 'mind sees' and instead of looking at the environment right in front of you (without any mental interceptions). What your mind sees are the shadows. How can a truth be found in a shadow when a shadow does not have a conscience? They are just projections of the mind and not the real thing. Our mental projections filters light of the real images and the shadow is what is being seen by the mind, which serves as the shadow of the truth. So we are blocking the total real image with our own labels that we project onto the real image, a kind of filtering of the truth, therefore we only see the shadows of the truth and not the actual truth, which is the life essence right in front of you. When we allow all light to pierce through (such as sunlight piercing through our eyes by itself), we can see all as it is, the Truth and most importantly the Essence of the Truth. So the world is staring at shadows of the truth and what is alarming is that people think the shadows ARE the truth. Truth can not be found in the skull, our true mind stretches beyond the skull. Our whole being sees.

The best we can do is give labels and personal beliefs (opinions) to the shadows if we want to try to understand it. But we do not understand the conscience nature of these things if we don't see ALL of it instead of filtering out parts of it. Our Thinking Mind does not have the capabilities to comprehend things in totality on its own, it needs the whole being to totally understand. The problem in putting names to things we don't truly understand is that our minds jump into asserting that it already knows it buy using personal labels to identify it. This is what is meant by 2-dimensional. If we only see shadows, our world becomes 2D. 

Let’s take a flower. A flower is not a flower, the effect of the whole is actually stem, leaves, root, petals, cells etc but we call the whole thing a flower so now that every time you look at a flower you think you know what it is just because you labeled it. Now apply that ‘label’ identity to everything you do in life. If you remove labels (the definitions you give to all kinds of phenomena), you see life in 3D, for what it actually is. We see life in labels in other words. So that now when you look at a flower you see it as a label, which is coming from your mental image and now juxtaposed onto the actual real flower in front of you, which you can’t see because you are now looking at your mental label of it. So therefore we go about life looking at our own mental images, the reflection of what’s actually in front of you. In other words, life becomes more and more 2d the more you label things. So a flower, the label you define it to be is now your belief of what you ‘think’ it is, therefore the filter of the truth so that you only see its shadow from the invisible eye of your mind, your label belief. 

One of the people in the cave is freed from his chains and steps out of his skull or steps outside the World of the Mental Plane and into the World of the Awakened, where all light pierces through without any kind of mental interceptions. He realizes he is not his Thinking Mind at all but his actual being part of actual life. and now can see the world as it is -- which is Absolute Reality and 3-dimensional, outside of the mental plane, the World of the Awakened. Our being extends everywhere and can NOT be located in any fixed place such as our Brain, which is enclosed in a skull. He finds that there is much much much more to this world than what the enclosed Thinking Mind can perceive, since the thinking mind is only seeing its own shadow -- the illusion. He enters the light (allows light to enter him with no blocks, he can perceive all brightly from the REAL SOURCE. When he returns to save all the other people that are chained in the cave, they all laugh at him, thinking what he is saying is not logical and absurd because they can only see the shadows and not understand beyond it since they've looked at the shadows their entire lives, especially the 'intellectuals' among them who thinks he knows the shadow world best, he thinks he is intelligent. This is how we are like. We are the ones laughing. It is interesting to point out that other esoteric films such as The Wizard of Oz and Life of Pi, the 'normal' people also have the same reactions, not capable of understanding the main character who has been awakened.

The Holotope

"The Holotope was invented by Randall Fontes. Randall was a one-time creator at the Exploratorium in San Francisco for light and sound projects. He's devoted his whole life to creating visual representations of the inner self and he's really hit it on this one. I'll just briefly describe the mandala shape: the circle in mathematics is called a Gosset polytope E8, it's actually a derivative of the Gosset polytope E8, which is a 248 dimensional object [click: Success in mapping 248-dimensional object]. This is an 8th dimensional object as a relation to that. 

Currently in modern physics, in a certain section of particle physics they're using the E8 as a model for the construction and description of the atom. So what we're looking at is, from a supersymmetry point of view, the one particle that exists in everything and everywhere, that is travelling at an infinite speed, appearing to be everywhere at once. And that's the primal pathway that that particle is travelling. So what we're looking at is the atomic structure of our reality. And what Randall has done is painstakingly layered each of the 8 dimensions with different colors and we'll be projecting different colored lights onto the Holotope so that you'll be able to see the different aspects of those dimensions. We'll be strobing them in different types of brainwaves patterns that your mind will begin to assemble the 8 dimensions and hopefully you'll pop into that 8th dimensional field. The other thing I want to point out is the fractal patterns in somewhat the backdrop, it's an equal partner in experience of the Holotope. Fractal math is demonstrative  of nonlinear creation. We're taking very simple patterns and elaborating them in infinite ways, so it represents the nature of our reality. The structure of a rock is a rock but no two rocks are the same -- it's infinite in terms of that variation. Such as we individuals are all human, but represent the multitude of humanity, the 6.5 billion of us ... As we project the lights, it will breathe back and forth between the supersymmetry and the infinite creations, sort of masculine and feminine, breathing in and out. What I love about this is people being representative of our sort of prime consciousness, primal consciousness, that a lot of things happen, people's innermost psyches, innermost spiritual connections begin to become revealed to them. So you might see past lives or parallel lives or the kinds of alternate realities that we're looking for to teleport ourselves to, through this method and means. It's an eyes-open meditation, and implicit in that for us is inviting the conscious, waking, rational mind into the dream time, into the altered state, into the multidimension. Most spiritual traditions up to this point has regarded the Ego mind as something of an obstacle to getting into these states. We're in a level now where we need to integrate that last part of our selves, the last part of our evolutionary self into the subconscious, into the conscious, connecting with our Higher Selves and our soul. When this happens we recommend that you basically stare into the center. As you stare into the center, soften your gaze, you'll be able to receive information from your peripheral vision which receives a whole different level of frequencies of information. So you'll be receiving it through you conscious mind and you'll be receiving it through your peripheral or your subtle states of reality as well."

That highschool math problem with a page-long solution was a cakewalk compared to recent mathematics answer that would ink an area the size of Manhattan if written out in small print. A total of 18 mathematicians and computer scientists from several countries worked for four years to successfully map the inner working of E8 -- one of the most complicated structure in math, a 248-dimensional object. The findings were reported today by the American Institute of Mathematics.

"E8 was discovered over a century ago, in 1887, and until now, no one thought the structure could ever be understood," said project leader Jeffrey Adams, a mathematician at the University of Maryland. "This groundbreaking achievement is significant both as an advance in basic knowledge, as well as a major advance in the use of large-scale computing to solve complicated mathematical problems."

The mapping of E8, according to researchers, may very well have the implications in mathematics and physics which won't be evident for years to come.

Underlying symmetrical objects such as spheres and cylinders is something called a Lie group -- a mathematical group invented by the 19th century Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie to study symmetry. E8 is an example of a Lie group.

"This is an exciting breakthrough," said Peter Sarnak, a researcher at Princeton University. "Understanding and classifying the representations of E8 and Lie groups has been critical to understanding phenomena in many different areas of mathematics and science, including algebra, geometry, number theory, physics, and chemistry. The project will be invaluable for future mathematicians and scientists."

The result of E8 and all its representations is 60 gigabytes in size, enough to store 45 continuous days of music in MP3 format. In comparison, the Human Genome Project, holding the entire genetic code of a cell is less than a gigabyte in size.

A unique aspect of this very large output answer is that unlike large-scale calculations, the size of the input is small compared to the enormous and very dense answer.

The Hundredth Monkey Effect

If this is true, what would it say about the collective human consciousness?

An excerpt from the book "The 100th Monkey", by Ken Keyes, Jr.:

The Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, had been observed in the wild for a period of over 30years. In 1952, on the island of Koshima, scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoesdropped in the sand. The monkey liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirtunpleasant. An 18-month-old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby stream. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned this new wayand they taught their mothers too.

 This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists. Between 1952 and 1958 all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable. Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social improvement. Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes.

Then something startling took place. In the autumn of 1958, a certain number of Koshimam onkeys were washing sweet potatoes -- the exact number is not known. Let us suppose that when the sun rose one morning there were 99 monkeys on Koshima Island who had learned to wash their sweet potatoes. Let's further suppose that later that morning, the hundredth monkey learned to wash potatoes.

THEN IT HAPPENED! By that evening almost everyone in the tribe was washing sweet potatoes before eating them. The added energy of this hundredth monkey somehow created an ideological breakthrough!

But notice: A most surprising thing observed by these scientists was that the habit of washing sweet potatoes then jumped over the sea...Colonies of monkeys on other islands and the mainland troop of monkeys at Takasakiyama began washing their sweet potatoes. Thus, when a certain critical number achieves an awareness,this new awareness may be communicated from mind to mind.

Although the exact number may vary, this Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon means that when only a limited number of people know of a new way, it may remain the conscious property of these people.  

But there is a point at which if only one more person tunes-in to a new awareness, a field is strengthened so that this awareness is picked up by almost everyone!
